Eduard Otto: botanist, traveler and redactor

The work of the german botanist Carl Friedrich Eduard Otto has been studied during the last years due to the testimonies that he made in his book Reiseerinnerungen an Cuba, Nord und Südamerica 1838-1841 about the visited countries. However, although these are interesting for the historiography of those countries, there was scarce data on this visitor’s life and work. In this paper detailed information and evaluation about this person was collected and a photograph of him was found. It was known that before his arrival in America, Otto had a great practical training in the best European botanical gardens, experience that he brought to the new continent. Upon his return to Europe, he played an important role in the development and prestige of the Hamburg Botanical Garden and was the editor of the Hamburguer Garten- und Blumenzeitung newspaper for about 40 years.
