La producción de semillas en los huertos caseros de las zonas occidental y central de Cuba

En Cuba los campesinos tradicionalmente han mantenido sus variedades, pero no de una manera estática, sino incluyendo en ese mantenimiento una selección consciente o inconsciente orientada en dos direcciones: la primera hacia el mantenimiento del tipo de planta deseado (reproducción de la variedad ancestral) y la segunda hacia el cambio de la misma mediante la selección de determinados atributos que llenen los requerimientos que les van imponiendo las condiciones cambiantes del medio donde se desarrolla la planta. De esta manera, la conservación de este patrimonio genético, rico en atributos de adaptación, supervivencia y rusticidad, requiere de un sistema informal, que no implique un conjunto de pasos pre-determinados hasta llegar a la semilla comercial. Se describen en el trabajo las diferentes variantes en la producción de semilla en huertos caseros de las zonas occidental y central de Cuba, así corno se particulariza en algunos de los procedimientos tradicionales empleados por los campesinos.
