A new species of the Amazonian bamboo genus Froesiochloa, discussing its placement within Olyreae (Poaceae)

The Amazon rainforest is an important phytogeographic domain in Brazil, which is known to harbor the largest humid tropical forest in the world. However, this domain has seen the smallest increase in the number of new species discovered compared to the other Brazilian environments. Along with the Atlantic rainforest, the Amazon includes the highest diversity of bamboos in the Americas, especially the herbaceous ones, members of the tribe Olyreae (Poaceae: Bambusoideae). During a review of herbaria in northern Brazil, we identified some specimens of herbaceous bamboo with a morphology that did not fit any known species. It has a unique morphology, including contracted synflorescences and leaf blades with a curved apex, a subcordate and slightly asymmetric base, and a fully pilose female anthecium, belonging to the rare and poorly known genus Froesiochloa G. A. Blake. The new species was found only in the Brazilian Amazonas state, and it is being compared to F. boutelouoides G. A. Blake, also occurring in the Amazon region. Additionally, phylogenetic studies discussed the placement of this genus within the grass tribe Olyreae. (Funding: CNPq)
