Resumen

La mentalidad estadounidense está muy influida por los mitos: América es una democracia. El capitalismo es libertad. La justicia es ciega. La mayoría de los estadounidenses confunden "democracia" con "democracia liberal", pero mientras que la "democracia" se refiere al imperio de la ley, la "democracia liberal" se entiende mejor como el imperio de leyes que benefician al capital en manos de grupos y clases específicos. En una democracia verdadera o ideal, los dirigentes tendrán que rendir cuentas a los votantes, y si los primeros se resistieran a rendir cuentas, los segundos deberían tener el derecho de revocación. Hay tres características esenciales que garantizan mejor una democracia adecuada: (a) una ciudadanía educada o informada que sea consciente de las cuestiones que se debaten y votan, (b) transparencia en la toma de decisiones, y (c) unos medios de comunicación responsables que combatan las mentiras, los "hechos alternativos" y las noticias falsas. En mayor o menor medida, todos estos elementos están ausentes en Estados Unidos.

Biografía del autor/a

Anton L. Allahar, Western University

Anton Allahar was born in Trinidad, West Indies, and completed his PhD in Political & Economic Sociology at the University of Toronto.  He is currently a Professor Emeritus at Western University (Canada).  Professor Allahar’s principal areas of interest are the sociology of economic development, nationalism & democracy, and ethnic and racial relations.  He has written/cowritten 10 books, edited 4 books and 3 special issues of journals, published over 100 journal articles and book chapters, and delivered more than 200 conference papers and invited lectures nationally and internationally.  Professor Allahar has also won 3 gold medals for outstanding academic achievements, and 7 major awards for excellence in university teaching. Dr. Allahar has been a visiting professor at 4 universities internationally (Fiji, Russia, Jamaica, Barbados) and in Cuba was awarded the “Categoría Docente Especial de Profesor Invitado” (La Universidad de la Habana) and “Investigador Honorífico Especial” (La Universidad de Oriente). Anton Allahar was also president of the Caribbean Studies Association and received the first ever “Lifetime Achievement Award” from that Association.  Finally, in 2012 Dr. Allahar was named a “distinguished Trinidadian in Canada” by the Trinidad & Tobago High Commission in Canada, and in the same year he was included in a special publication titled Who’s who in the Trinidad & Tobago diaspora.
