Resumen

The study analyzes the environmental impact of fast fashion and consumers' social representations within the framework of Sustainable Development Goal 12—specifically Target 12.5 (waste reduction). Using a qualitative methodology, biographical interviews were conducted with 19 individuals across various ages and sociodemographic backgrounds. The results reveal heterogeneous patterns: a functional and economic approach predominates among older, lower-income participants, whereas the identity-related and emotional dimensions prevail among young people with higher symbolic capital. An "intention-behavior gap" was identified across all profiles, as ethical and environmental awareness did not translate into actual changes in purchasing decisions. Circular practices emerge more from anti-waste logic than from explicit ecological values. Theoretical saturation was reached at 15 interviews, and credibility was reinforced through triangulation and participant validation. The study concludes that the transition toward sustainable consumption requires structural transformations that overcome economic, logistical, and symbolic barriers.
