Comprendiendo la obesidad infantil como una condición bio-psico-social

Resumen

La obesidad infantil constituye una enfermedad compleja y multifactorial, causada por la interrelación de factores biológicos, psicológicos y sociales. Aunque existe amplio conocimiento sobre sus causas y consecuencias, este padecimiento continúa en aumento mundialmente, y afecta casi a un tercio de la población infantil y adolescente de América Latina y del Norte, especialmente en zonas marginadas y de bajos recursos. El presente trabajo teórico analiza, de forma sintetizada, la diversa etiología bio-psico-social de la obesidad infantil, con especial énfasis en el rol de los factores familiares y psicológicos, entre ellos las prácticas y estilos de crianza y de alimentación, el comer emocional y la autoeficacia. Se destaca cómo la obesidad es un problema cíclico o en espiral que se refuerza a sí mismo, así como la necesidad de desarrollar programas de intervención a nivel individual, familiar, comunitario, y políticas públicas para promover el desarrollo saludable de niños y adolescentes.

Investigadora posdoctoral en la Universidad de Columbia Británica. Doctora en investigación psicológica por la Universidad Iberoamericana de Ciudad de México. Máster en psicología clínica. Licenciada en psicología por la Universidad de La Habana. Este trabajo fue realizado como parte de una investigación doctoral financiada por el Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT) y la Universidad Iberoamericana de la Ciudad de México.
