Abstract

The objective of this work is the application of the concept of population potentials in order to describe the spatial structure of the European Union. The concept of population potentials allows us the construction of a “macroscopic cartography” and gives us a gradual representation of the influence of the population on the territory and it also, shows its structural characteristics. The maps of potentials clearly draw the spatial structure of the European Union, around its large central agglomeration area: Grand Mancherster-London-Paris-Cologne-Düsseldorf-Rhur Valley; showing a surprising coincidence with the light diffusion areas obtained from the satellite night-time pictures
