This paper addresses different problems with are very common in communication engineering. In particular, the problem of estimating a functional of a signal process on the basis of noisy observations and the problem of detecting a deterministic signal in Gaussian noise are considered. For this purpose, firstly, we show the approximate Karhunen-Loève expansions of a stochastic process. Afterwards, these expansions are applied to solve the previous problems, obtaining solutions which are computationally feasible and can be easily implemented on a computer
